How it works

The whole process, start to finish

Changing your name in Australia is not one task, it is fifty small ones spread across government, banks, work, and home. Here is exactly how Surname Switch turns that into a single guided path, and what happens with your information along the way.

Two truths that shape everything

First, after marriage in Australia most people do not need a legal name change at all, just a marriage certificate. Second, there is no single button that updates your name everywhere. Each organisation has its own process. Surname Switch is built around both facts.

The five stages

What actually happens

Follow the path from your first answer to your last update.

1

You answer a short questionnaire

We ask what is changing your name, which state or territory you live in, whether you were born in Australia, and your old and new surname. Then you tick the organisations that apply to you, with the common ones already selected. It takes about three minutes.

2

We work out if you need a legal change

This is the part other services bury. Based on your answers we tell you plainly whether you need to register a formal change with Births, Deaths and Marriages, or whether your marriage or divorce certificate is enough. You get the reason, the proof you will need, and the cost if a formal change applies.

3

We build your plan in the smartest order

Your updates are grouped into phases. Foundations first, because once your driver licence and Medicare show your new name, everyone else accepts the change easily. Then money, then everyday life. Each phase explains why it comes when it does, so the order works for you rather than against you.

4

We draft each message for you

For every organisation, you get a ready to send message written in plain, polite Australian English, with your name change and the right proof already in it. You add your account number, then copy and send. For places that must be done in person or by secure login, we give you a short, clear how to instead.

Your data here: to write a message, your name and the organisation are sent to our drafting service, used to generate that one message, and not stored. Your account numbers stay with you, we never ask for them.
5

You track it to done

Your dashboard shows a live progress bar as you tick things off. You can stop and come back, and the warm little wins keep it from feeling like a chore. When the last item is ticked, you are completely switched over, with nothing forgotten.

Honest about limits

What we can and cannot do for you

We would rather be straight than oversell.

We do this for you

  • Tell you if a legal change is needed
  • Write every notification message
  • Prefill forms where the format allows
  • Put everything in the right order

You do this part yourself

  • Lodge the change with Births, Deaths and Marriages
  • Update government ID and banks in person or by secure login
  • Send the messages from your own inbox

By law, identity and banking changes have to be made by you, often in person. That is a good thing for your security. We remove every other piece of the work and make those few steps as simple as possible.
